RACE: Wendy’s Wellsburg 5K
WHERE: Wellsburg, W.Va.
WHEN: The weekend before July 4
COURSE: Streets, both asphalt and brick; one big loop.
RACE RECAP: Organized by the town’s Fourth of July committee, the race is very family friendly. Many locals participate and you can often find town residents along the route cheering people on. The police blocked off some of the paths, but cars were allowed to go through the route after a majority of the runners went through. The awards were the first two places for every age group.
MY RACE: It was my oldest son’s first race that he completed by himself, and his little brother and I kept with him every step of the way. I admit, I was frustrated by our slow, steady pace (unfortunately I am that competitive sometimes), but I had a great time with the boys. We got to see the Ohio River, some fancy houses and some of the Rust Belt decay.
My daughter finished with a personal record, as did my husband. No awards this time, but a lot of pride and great memories.
